Bicycles: The Modern Day Transportation

by Kelly Jo on May 17, 2011

Global warming has left the major headlines due to the massive earthquakes, bombings, wars, assassinations, etc. But it still causes a threat to generations to come. It’s time to make your carbon imprint on this world a lighter one!

It’s time to ride bicycles! Not only are they an extremely healthier way of transportation, but you can save a ton of money on gas, cab fare, metro fare and parking. If an economical break isn’t what you’re after, think of how much less pollution would exist if people rode bicycles to work. And what a great way to decrease body fat along the way. If your ride to work takes you 25-35min via bike, a round trip would suffice for that hour of cardio everyday. Say goodbye to the gym membership! Once you get home from work just stretch those quads and hips out and call it a day!

Now that the weather has broken and Spring is in the air, I have pulled my bike out of storage. This year New York City has more bike lanes than ever! I am amazed at how little they are used. Where have all the bikers gone?? For quite some time, bicyclers were seen as a menace to society, swerving in and out of traffic, jumping red lights and scaring pedestrians at cross walks. Now that there are bike lanes on almost all major avenues (and lights for bikers) the threat and danger involved with city riding has diminished. But remember bikers!! Be nice, ride with traffic, play by the same rules as if you were driving your car. That is the only way to lose the menacing titles that have been pinned to us for the reckless riding of the past. And WEAR YOUR HELMET!!! I cannot stress enough… safety first. More often than not, an accident is caused by a pedestrian, a car or a pothole in the road more than it is your riding skills. You only get one skull, don’t break it on the pavement because your concerned a helmet might flatten your hairdo! In conclusion: get smart, get economical, get environmental, get healthy… Get on your bicycle!!!
